[edit] Topics covered
The above-named avatars met on SJSU SLIS Island; team members initially communicated verbally via conference call, then via SL Chat when technical difficulties caused the conference call to be discontinued. The island is a work in progress; avatar Jeremy Kabumpo gave the present team members a guided tour of its initial features.
The island experience begins with the (proposed) Walking Campus, currently represented by a series of enlarged photographs of SJSU’s campus landmark buildings. From this central location the visitor is guided to the island’s main subdivisions by a series of signposts. Areas have been set-aside for Research and Development; Classrooms; a Teaching Sandbox; and Student Commons. A short distance away from the central campus lays the Public Sandbox, its presence marked by a large sign, which rest upon a pair of matching arches. The design of the arches is based on those found at the entrance of SJSU’s campus.
The Public Sandbox contains a colorful sculpture installation, somewhat in the vein of Claes Oldenburg, depicting a much larger-than-life beach ball, sand pail, and child’s hand shovel. The pail, which lies on its side, is actually a small theatre, replete with chairs and a sandy floor. The bottom of the pail doubles as the theatre’s screen. Currently the theatre presents a short tutorial on building objects in SL. The visitor is invited to sit in one of the chairs, view the video tutorial, and then practice what he or she has learned within the confines of the sandbox. Hovering in the northeast corner of the island are a series of Large Rings, each made up of individual fan-like blades. The blades continually rotate, and are made to serve as a meeting place for avatars, potentially several hundred. From the vantage point of the rotating Large Rings, the avatar is afforded a view of the immediate neighborhood, which includes Healthinfo Island, Info Island, Cybrary City, as well as SJSU SLIS Island.
[edit] To do items
Areas of responsibility are to be divided between team members. Kim and Frank Hughes have declared their interest in managing the Student Commons, but, as SL novices, they will be highly dependent on experienced builders. The Hughes’ have begun the work of chronicling the efforts of the SJSU SLIS Spring Builders in this Wiki. Teal Smith has indicated an interest in adding a Conference Center to the site.
[edit] Next meeting
To be determined.
