You can see that getting free stuff from the FREEBIE WAREHOUSE is easy. Teleport there, then right click on a box for clothes, jewelry, animations, weapons, etc. There's a lot of stuff...and all you have to do is "buy" it for $0 Lindens.
[edit] Getting Some Free Hair, Body Parts, Outfits, etc.
One of the odd things about the SL interface is there are conflicting entry points to interact with the software. If you choose to search in the "map" search tool, you will generally find nothing, but if you activate the "search" interface found on the screen tool bar, then you get a hit.
So, hitting the "teleport" command results in our instantaneous journey to Body Basics. Where you need to be patient (it takes a while to res as evidenced by the blank pictures in the image below), open-minded about cartoon nudity (lots of naked avatars advertising their wares), and not averse to experimentation.
There was some controversy raised during the SJSU 246 class on Second Life about the fact that all the bodies in SL looked like "porn" stars, etc. All I can say is that people will pay others to alter their real selves with a surgeon's knife and that in SL you can look like whatever you want. Desire is democratic, taste is elitist, or so the poets have inferred.
But be prepared to see "naked" avatars in Body Basics.
[edit] Other Places to Get Free Stuff
Many, many stores and other locations offer boxes of free merchandise. Everything from skins to clothes, to scripts, HUDs, and vehicles can be found for free. Here are some other locations with large numbers of freebies.

Note: Be aware that many freebie boxes contain the same items as other freebie boxes. People frequently collect assortments of freebies from multiple places, then create their own freebie boxes. View the contents of freebie boxes before you copy them into your inventory, to spot duplicates. And go through your inventory frequently to weed out unneeded items. Large inventories are slow to search and unwieldy to browse.
