Summary

The Object Selector was introduced in Sloodle 0.2, and can be rezzed from a Sloodle Set (versions 0.702 and later). It allows in-world control of the Sloodle Object Distributor.

The Object Selector was removed in version 0.3 of SLOODLE as its features were folded into the Sloodle Object Distributor.

Compatibility

The Object Selector is a sub-component of the Sloodle Set, so please check the Sloodle Set Compatibility information.

Setup

Automatic Configuration

The Object Selector is distributed as part of the Sloodle Set. It is recommended that you use the official Sloodle.org Object Distributor to obtain an appropriate Set for your Sloodle version. Rez and configure the Sloodle Set, and click on the object vendor box (the tall one in the middle). Select the "Object Selector" option from the dialog that appears, and an Object Selector should be rezzed for you.

The Sloodle Set will automatically configure the Object Selector for you, so it should be ready to use.

NOTE: You can have as many Object Selectors as you like, but only a single Sloodle Object Distributor for any one site at any one time. The Selector exists to allow access to the Distributor from potentially any location in-world.

Notecard Configuration

As with many Sloodle objects, if you prefer you can configure the Object Selector manually using a notecard. It uses the same format as the 'sloodle_config' notecard for a Sloodle Set, so you can use the Sloodle notecard setup page on your Moodle site to generate one (if you are an administrator). The text from there should be placed into a notecard called "sloodle_config" in the Object Selector's inventory.

Currently, there is no automatic way to reset the Selector if you change the configuration notecard. Before replacing the configuration notecard, go into the Selector's inventory, and manually reset the "sloodle_object_selector" script. When you replace the notecard now, the Selector should detect the change. Hopefully, a "Reset" option will be made available in the menu if the Selector's owner touches it.

Notecard configuration is useful because:

  • it will not lose its configuration when it is reset
  • it does not require the use of a Sloodle Set every time
  • it can be slightly more secure than automatic configuration

Usage

Any avatar can request objects from the Object Selector, so ensure that there is no sensitive information there.

When the Object Selector is rezzed and configured, it will display the address of the Moodle site it is configured to use. A user must touch the Selector in order to use it, at which point it will attempt to retrieve a list of available objects from Moodle. If the list is unavailable (e.g. there are no objects, or there is no Distributor), then it will report an error and revert back to waiting.

Otherwise, a menu showing a list of up to 12 objects will be displayed (12 is the maximum which can be displayed... additional ones are ignored). When the user selects an object from the menu, the Selector will notify the Moodle site, which will attempt to contact the Distributor. The success or failure will be reported to the user, and the Selector will revert back to it's 'ready' state.

The final distribution phase may fail if the Moodle site thinks there is a Distributor, but finds that it has actually been shutdown/deleted.

Note that only one avatar can use the Selector at one time.
