[edit] Summary

Allows users to attempt a multiple-choice Moodle quiz from within Second Life, and receive visual feedback.

[edit] Compatibility

NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MOODLE 1.9

Otherwise, the Quiz Chair is a sub-component of the Sloodle Set, so please check the Sloodle Set Compatibility information.

[edit] Setup

[edit] Creating a Quiz

Most Moodle quizzes will not work with the Quiz Chair, as it can only handle multiple choice quizzes, where each answer is less than 24 characters long (although the answers usually get visually cut-off after about 9 characters). The questions should be raw text (no HTML or images), and less than 512 character in length each. Quizzes which do not meet these requirements have unpredictable results.

If you want to use a quiz with Sloodle, it is best to have no other Moodle quizzes in the same course, as you cannot select which quiz you will use.

[edit] Automatic Configuration

The Quiz Chair is distributed as part of the Sloodle Set. It is recommended that you use the official Sloodle.org Object Distributor to obtain an appropriate Set for your Sloodle version. Rez and configure the Sloodle Set, and click on the object vendor box (the tall one in the middle). Select the "Quiz Chair" option from the dialog that appears, and a Quiz Chair should be rezzed for you.

The Sloodle Set will automatically configure the Quiz Chair for you, so it should be ready to use.

Please note: there is currently no way to select which quiz you want to attempt. It uses the first quiz it finds in the course.

[edit] Notecard Configuration

If you prefer, you can configure the Quiz Chair manually using a notecard. It uses the same format as the 'sloodle_config' notecard for a Sloodle Set, so you can use the Sloodle notecard setup page on your Moodle site to generate one. The text from there should be placed into a notecard called "sloodle_config" in the Quiz Chair's inventory. You may need to reset the scripts before the notecard is detected.

Notecard configuration is useful because:

  • it will not lose its configuration when it is reset
  • it does not require the use of a Sloodle Set every time
  • it can be slightly more secure than automatic configuration

[edit] Usage

There are several known bugs with the Quiz Chair

When the quiz chair is rezzed, the user should sit on it (right-click it, and select "Sit" or "Ride"). The Quiz Chair will attempt to load the questions, and will report success or failure. If the questions were successfully loaded, then it will display the first question in a dialog box, with the available answers on buttons below. When the user selects an answer, the feedback will shown as chair movement, depending on the 'value' of that answer. For example, if the answer was totally correct, the chair will move up. If the answer was partly correct, it will move up, but not as far. Incorrect (zero) answers result in no movement, while negatively scored answers will result in downward movement.

After each question, then following question will be presented in the same way.

[edit] Known Issues

  • Only works for multi-choice questions.
  • Question text must be < 512 characters.
  • Answer text must be < 24 characters.
  • Allows unlimited re-attempts of the same quiz.
  • Sometimes seems to get mixed up about the answer on the first question for some reason.
  • Doesn't yet obey time limit set on tests.
  • Moodle quizzes have all kinds of options and settings which ignored.

[edit] Future Work

  • Resolve above issues! :-)
  • Implement more question types.
  • Implement more interesting visual feedback mechanisms.
