Preservation Management instructor Vicky McCargar quoted in The New York Times on the demand for digital archivists
Vicky McCargar, who teaches
Preservation Management LIBR 259 for SLIS, was quoted in the Sunday New York Times in February about the growing profession of digital archivist. The article points out that the difficulty of sustaining digital assets and electronic archives is forcing organizations from libraries to law firms to look for expertise.
McCargar estimated that as many as 20,000 people work currently work in the field today, a number that will only grow in the next decade. See article, "Digital Archivists, Now in Demand", by Conrad de Aenlle, published February 7, 2009.
It's good news for library and information science programs, McCargar adds, because people with strictly IT backgrounds tend not to have the knowledge of records life cycles, metadata for preservation and the OAIS Framework for long-term sustainability — all of which are core topics in the SLIS digital preservation curriculum.
