We encourage you to get comfortable with the contents of our SLIS web site (http://slisweb.sjsu.edu). In particular, look over the "Current Students" section which contains links to information you will need to know during your time as a student with us. |

to Slisadmin (and other lists, if desired). SLIS faculty and staff email important announcements and last–minute administrative changes to current students through slisadmin. If you aren't subscribed to slisadmin, you will miss these critical announcements, so we require that you subscribe to this electronic list. |

Request an ANGEL account. SLIS instructors and students use the ANGEL online course software (Learning Management System) for class lectures, assignments, resources, discussions, etc. 7-10 business days after you submit your request, you should receive your ANGEL account information via e-mail. In the meantime, you can view ANGEL tutorial video tours and a sample ANGEL class.
If the information doesn't arrive as scheduled, check your e-mail spam folders. For further assistance, contact Dale David.
Please note that due to holidays and furlough days, account requests and Libr 203 enrollments will not be processed between December 22 – January 4.
November 17 – 30, 2009: Students who have requested an ANGEL account will be enrolled in LIBR 203 on MySJSU by SLIS office staff. You cannot enroll in LIBR 203 yourself. Read details about your enrollment in LIBR 203.

Bookmark the SLIS21 blog. We use this blog as another way for getting information out to students. It deals mostly with current registration or curriculum issues, and students may also ask questions and get them answered.
Note: You can subscribe to a RSS feed (see RSS explained) to receive the latest SLIS21 blog updates as they occur. |

Set up a SLISLife account. SLISlife is a social networking place for SLIS students and faculty. You can set up a SLISLife account now (see SLISLife tutorials) and log in to get a flavor of the school, or you can wait to learn about it during your LIBR 203 class.

Register for classes.
For their first semester, most beginning SLIS students register for some combination of the core classes, LIBR 200, 202 or 204.
You will also be automatically registered for LIBR 203, a required 1–unit course, after you request an ANGEL account (see details and a timeline). Do not try to register yourself for Libr 203.
Note: The courses in this program are difficult and require substantial work and time. Every course hour in a graduate–level course can require a minimum of 3 hours of your work outside of the "class" and may require much more depending on the complexity of the material. Most students carry between 1 – 3 courses per semester. Other obligations such as work and family should be carefully considered when deciding how many courses to take. Dropping classes after the deadlines early in the semester can be problematic and expensive. We recommend that you be conservative in the number of classes you take during your first semester.

Pay your Special Session tuition fees. Locate payment deadlines in the "Finances" section of your MySJSU Student Center Web page. Please note that tuition payment deadlines may be as short as a few days after you are registered for a class. Pay your fees on time or your classes will be automatically dropped. |

Read your course syllabus/greensheet. Although instructors have no requirement to post their syllabus (greensheet) before the first day of class, many choose to do so. You may be able to access your course syllabus early to find out how the course will be run, what the assignments are, etc. If your class isn't linked yet, you can check again at a later date, or you can look for your instructor's course in a previous semester. Syllabi on the LIBR 200, 202 and 204 core classes are usually only updated a bit from semester to semester.

View our Flash Orientation. SLIS will not have an on-campus orientation for Spring 2010. Instead, at some time in January 2010 you will receive an e-mail with a link to a Flash-based new student orientation. This orientation will contain a welcome from Director Ken Haycock and our faculty, an overview of our online technologies, information about how to access King Library resources, etc.

Start LIBR 203. LIBR 203 is a required one–unit, credit/no credit, self-paced, totally online class which introduces you to different SLIS online technologies, tools and success strategies. It normally takes about four weeks to complete the course. However, if you begin on the first day that this class is available and accelerate your pace, you can complete the course before your 3-credit classes begin. All incoming students must successfully complete LIBR 203 by February 23, 2010 or a hold will be put on their records which will prevent them from continuing in their second semester.
You can actually begin LIBR 203 coursework on January 5, 2010.

Enroll in your ANGEL class section(s). Normally you must both register for a course through the University's my.sjsu.edu site and self-enroll in that class section on our department's ANGEL learning management system (although not all instructors use ANGEL for their classes). Check the course web page for the syllabus (or "greensheet" as it is labeled at SJSU) for the date when the ANGEL course site will become available, and check in MySJSU's messages to receive your ANGEL class section access code from your instructor(s).

Read Academic Advising guidelines and Advising FAQ. It is each student's responsibility to contact their academic advisor as needed. You do not have to meet with your academic advisor prior to registering for your first semester classes. In fact, most new students decide to immediately take one or more of our core courses (LIBR 200, 202 and/or 204) and have no need to discuss possible optional classes and tracks until those basic courses are taken. However, if you wish to contact your advisor at any time, you may of course do so. Your academic advisor's name is listed on your SLIS welcome letter. |

Explore our SLIS Media Productions offerings. We have a rich multimedia collection that students can access on the Internet. Dr. Ken Haycock, our director, does a Director's Forum twice a year. We also run a Colloquia series, and there are videos available about graduation, our student associations, internships, LIBR 289, etc. These offerings will give you good input into what is going on at our school and in librarianship in general.
Please also check out the News and Happenings sections of our SLIS home page to see what students and faculty are up to.
