SLIS Online Learning
Live anywhere and take advantage of the convenience and flexibility of a fully online format.
Our students interact with peers and instructors through web conferencing, social networking platforms, a web-based learning management system, and immersive environments. Most course content is delivered asynchronously — giving our students the freedom to access the course at any time they choose, from any location. Some courses also include occasional "live" synchronous sessions.
By using sophisticated technology, our students are better prepared to successfully navigate a rapidly changing information landscape and apply technology in their professional lives.
Online Learning Technology
Our students benefit from integration of the following sophisticated technology into their online learning program:
- Documentation: ANGEL learning management system.
A platform where faculty can organize course content, moderate discussions, and track student progress. In addition, students can use it to construct their electronic portfolio (a culminating experience option for SLIS students).
[2 minutes 36 seconds] - Documentation: Elluminate Live web conferencing platform.
A tool that supports real-time audio conversations and a shared virtual work space, including the ability to conduct guided tours of web pages and present slides to accompany presentations. It also provides breakout rooms for small group work by students.
[2 minutes 54 seconds] - Documentation: SLIS Life social networking space.
A place where students can post messages, contribute to online blogs, view searchable profiles to connect with their peers by areas of interest or location, and connect with alum and hiring managers.
[3 minutes 41 seconds] - Documentation: SLIS Second Life Island.
An immersive environment where students can construct 3D objects and exhibits, make presentations through their avatars, and meet in virtual groups for discussion.

Student Support
To prepare new students for a successful Online Learning experience, we require all new students to complete a one–unit course that introduces them to our technology (LIBR 203: Online Social Networking: Technology and Tools).
