Children’s Librarian

What I am doing now.

I perform professional library work and provide information in general reference, audio-visual, children’s, young adult services, or classify, catalog, review and evaluates books. I give book talks, conduct reading programs, answer a variety of questions and services on committees. I promote customer satisfaction through friendly, efficient service, and resolve customer complaints. I’m in charge of a small community library during the short-term absence of its manager, as needed. I travel throughout Los Angeles County for meetings and training.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

I benefited greatly from each professor, and thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student in the MLIS program. I would like to highlight that the following courses have been the most helpful to me as a Children’s Librarian: Info. 200, Info. 210, Info. 232, Info. 260A, Info. 263, Info. 265, Info. 269, Info. 275, Info. 281. These courses have helped me to understand information-seeking behaviors; how to conduct a thorough reference interview; how to deal with the unique challenges of working in a public library setting; how to apply information on children’s development and psychological needs to create and provide programs and services; and how to provide culturally appropriate services to diverse communities. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the cataloging class and have gained an appreciation for our catalogers.
