International Directory of National Archives Seeks Students, Alumni for Spring Semester

MARA Blog

Published: November 29, 2016 by Anna Maloney

Books have been written about national archives in the past, usually focusing on the national archives of a particular nation. However, none have concentrated on the national archives of all 195 countries recognized through the United Nations (plus Taiwan, which is not so recognized). The International Directory of National Archives, to be co-edited by Dr. Anthony Bernier and Dr. Pat Franks, will serve as a single source of information about national archives around the globe.

If you are enthusiastic about history and archives, this is your opportunity to join the SJSU team that will contribute to this important work.  A team of student and alumni began to gather information about a number of National Archives in August 2016.  Now, we are seeking additional students to conduct research during the spring 2017 term on various national archives and to write summaries of their findings following a template created to ensure consistency across entries.

What’s in it for you?  Good question:

Your entry will be published in the Directory (which will be in print and electronic), so you will be able to cite this publication on your resume.
Your name will be included in the Directory.  You will be taking your first steps to being recognized as a contributor to a published work.
You can earn credit at the same time, if you register for INFO 298 or MARA 294. Of course, you can volunteer to participate as well if you are not interested in earning credit.
You will have evidence (your completed entry/entries) that can be used to support the core competency related to global communities (MLIS – Comp. O and MARA – Comp. J).

Want to learn more?

Complete this form to indicate your intent and to provide information, such as your current status (MLIS, MARA, alumni), whether you are bi-lingual (can you read materials printed in a language other than English), if you wish to volunteer or earn credit, etc.

If you are interested in earning credit, we will work on your student learning outcomes (MARA 294) or student expectations (INFO 298). You’ll be contacted with additional information about registering for either MARA 294 or INFO 298 (or volunteering) after you complete the online survey.

A web conference will be scheduled one week prior to the start of the term to get the team off to a good start.  A Doodle poll will be used to determine the best day/time for the majority and a recording will be shared with those who may not be able to attend.
