Dr. Michael Stephens, associate professor at the San
José State University School of Information, was invited to serve
on the advisory board of a recently funded Institute of
Museum and Library Services Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian
Program project: Training
Future Librarians for Civic Engagement and City
Collaboration. The project focuses on civic technology,
an emerging set of practices in using information, and communica

Professor Anthony Bernier recently celebrated two landmark
achievements: he was awarded the 2019 Association for Library and
Information Science Education’s research grant, and he was
elected to serve as chair of the American Library
Association’s Library History Round Table.

to announce that Assistant Professor
Michele Villagran was awarded the 2019 Academic Law Libraries
Special Interest Section’s Research and Scholarship Grant for her
proposed project: Examination of Cultural Intelligence within
Academic Law Librarians.
In honor of their significant contributions to the San José State
University School of Information, three faculty members recently
received notable promotions: Dr. Kristen Rebmann, Dr. Michelle
Chen, and Dr. Tonia San Nicolas-Rocca.

of Fame for his “service and contributions to the association.”

Hirsh, a long-time member of the Association of Library and
Information Science Education, has been voted
president-elect of the organization.
Recognized for her significant accomplishments in the library
profession and contributions to the advancement of the library
and information studies field, Dr.
Sandra Hirsh is the 2019 winner of the University of
California, Los Angeles’ Library and Information Studies
Distinguished Alumni Award.
LYRASIS Learning is an education platform for webinars on
subjects, such as content solutions, leadership and emerging
trends, preservation solutions and technology. iSchool
instructors will be teaching courses through the partnership.
One of the San José State University School of Information’s
newest faculty members,
Dr. Michele Villagran, has authored two chapters in a
recently published book and will be speaking at several
professional conferences in coming months addressing diversity
and biases.
The faculty-led, student and alumni-researched International Directory of National
Archives is the first of its kind to provide
comprehensive information about the 195 countries recognized by
the United Nations.
Blockchain technology may be the wave of the future in libraries,
and Drs. Sue
Alman and Sandra
Hirsh of the San José State University School of
Information want to help bring it to the forefront of
professional discussion and implementation through a book in the
American Library Association’s Library Futures series.
