iSchool Poster Session at 2022 CLA Conference Boosts Confidence for Student and Alumni Presenters
After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, students and alumni at the San José State University School of Information converged in Sacramento to present at the iSchool’s poster session, held during the 2022 California Library Association Conference.
A total of 14 group and individual
projects were presented by current iSchool students and alumni.
Presentations covered a variety of topics, from cultural
preservation to information literacy.
Dr. Lettie Conrad is 21st Graduate of Gateway PhD Program
Dr. Lettie Conrad has completed the Gateway PhD program with her doctorate conferred by Queensland University of Technology, the former partner university of the San José State University School of Information.
Six Graduating Students Receive Awards for Excellence
Graduation festivities are in full
swing, and six students from the San José State University School
of Information will be graduating with one more award to put on
their resumes. Stephanie Duran, Natasha Finnegan, Ayana
Sarrieddine, Ariell Lomax, Jaime D. Zullo, and Kristin Peace were
selected by the faculty to receive one of the Director’s Awards for
Excellence.
Dr. Butler Becomes 20th Individual to Earn a PhD through International Partnership
Dr. Walter Butler is one of the few
remaining individuals to have his doctorate conferred by
Queensland University of Technology, the founding partner
university of the Gateway PhD program. The partnership between
the San José State University School of Information and the
Queensland University of Technology lasted from 2008 to 2021. In
March 2022, he became the 20th individual to graduate from the
Gateway PhD program.
Student Chapter of the Year Award Goes to ALASC
iSchool Students Recognized for their ‘Incredible Work’
The American Library Association Student Chapter at the San José State University School of Information has been awarded Chapter of the Year. This is the fifth time the ALA Student Chapter has won this prestigious award. One of the main reasons ALASC was chosen was due to their member engagement, as well as the chapter’s ability to create opportunities for leadership, especially during the pandemic.
Dr. Okumoto Completes PhD through Gateway Program
Last fall, Dr. Richard Okumoto’s dissertation was conferred by Queensland University of Technology, the former partner of the San José State University School of Information’s Gateway PhD program. Okumoto is the 19th doctoral student to complete the program through the QUT partnership, which spanned 2008 through 2021.
iSchool Student Selected as BSLISE International Scholar
Graduate student Sabrina Gunn has been selected as the first Building Strong Library and Information Science Education International Scholar, a newly created position through a partnership with the San José State University School of Information.

Spring 2022 Scholarship Winners Announced
This spring, the School of Information at San José State University awarded a total of 44 scholarships valued at $124,000 to new and continuing students enrolled in its master’s degree programs.
American Library Association Awards Seven iSchool Students Spectrum Scholarships
Congratulations to the 2021 Spectrum Scholars!
The American Library Association awarded a total of 60 highly competitive Spectrum Scholarships this year to “exceptional students” across the U.S. and Canada who are pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. Seven of those recipients are students enrolled in the fully online and ALA-accredited MLIS program at San José State University’s School of Information.

A lot of unseen work goes into every student-created event at the San José State University School of Information; the recent book giveaway and virtual book circle organized by the American Library Association Student Chapter is a case in point. From a fortuitous discovery at the American Library Association’s summer 2020 conference to a post-event reflection video, the ALASC’s executive board brainstormed, applied for funding, and juggled the logistics needed to implement their vision.

The Student Scholarship Awards Committee has chosen Samantha Hamilton to receive the Ken Haycock Award for Exceptional Professional Promise. Hamilton, who earns her Master of Library and Information Science degree this May, will receive $1,000 and a citation and will deliver the graduating student address at San José State University School of Information’s virtual convocation this year.

The Fall/Winter 2020-2021 issue of Archeota, the publication of San José State University’s student chapter of the Society of American Archivists, is now online. The current issue marks the fifth anniversary of the semiannual publication; the first issue appeared in spring of 2015.
