The SJSU School of Information offers a number of courses designed to give graduate students and working professionals experience with the most innovative and important technologies in the field of library and information science.

The San José State University (SJSU) School of Information offers a number of courses designed to give graduate students and working professionals experience with the most innovative and important technologies in the field of library and information science. iSchool students also gain hands-on experience using emerging technologies daily since they take all of their courses online.

Graduate students in the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and Master of Archives and Records Administration (MARA) degree programs at the SJSU School of Information learn a great deal about technology in the interactive online learning environment. Over the course of a semester, a typical student will use the Canvas online learning management system daily, attend virtual workshops via Blackboard Collaborate, watch lectures and presentations on Panopto, create a blog on WordPress, and use various software programs such as PowerPoint and Prezi to create presentations and complete assignments.

In addition to using technology in their courses, iSchool students have the opportunity to study a number of technology-focused subjects taught by experts in the field of information technology. Included in the current spring 2015 course offerings are data mining, information visualization, metadata, and digital curation, to name only a few. These courses along with others on web design, user experience, cybersecurity, and other hot topics are offered to ensure that all iSchool students have the most sought-after technology skills when they enter the job market.

The SJSU School of Information also supports working professionals by offering essential technology courses through its Open Classes and Post-Master’s Certificate programs and in collaboration with the American Library Association’s (ALA) Advanced e-Course  professional development options.

The newest of the ALA e-courses is Library Technology for the Low-Tech Librarian, which runs from April 6, 2015 to June 26, 2015 and is taught by iSchool Lecturer Dr. Timothy Dickey. The ALA e-course is geared toward librarians who want to expand their knowledge of library technology in order to provide the best service and grow professionally. The 12-week online course covers a wide variety of high-tech library topics including integrated library systems (ILS), library websites, cloud computing, and emerging technologies.

By constantly innovating in the delivery and variety of 21st century technology courses, the SJSU School of Information brings state-of-the-art information science to both graduate students and information professionals.
