iSchool Prioritizes Health and Wellness with Addition of New Advisor

Loida Garcia-Febo

Focused on health and wellness, the San José State University School of Information has tapped into Loida Garcia-Febo’s expertise and passion for wellness in librarianship, bringing her on board as the iSchool’s first health and wellness advisor. Garcia-Febo is past-president of the American Library Association, among other noteworthy positions. In this new role at the iSchool, she will bring a variety of resources about mental health and wellness.

San José State Alumna and Librarian Wins I Love My Librarian Award

The American Library Association has selected a San José State University alumna and librarian for its 2023 I Love My Librarian Award. Kathryn Blackmer Reyes graduated from the SJSU School of Information with her Master of Library and Information Science degree. She now holds the director position of the Africana, Asian American, Chicano, and Native American Studies Center at the university’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Library.

It’s a Home Run! iSchool Students and Faculty Partner with University Baseball Team on New Sports Analytics Club

The newly launched Sports Analytics Club represents an incredibly exciting and innovative partnership between the San José State University School of Information and the university’s baseball team. The club, which met for the first time in November 2022, is led by Master of Library and Information Science degree program students and formely led by co-presidents Cori Garfias and Michelle Miyoshi (both of whom have graduated).

Three iSchool Students Win REFORMA Scholarships

Rosa PenaThe Los Angeles Chapter of REFORMA has awarded three scholarships to students completing their Master of Library and Information Science degree program at the San José State University School of Information. Rosa Pena and Lauren Kime were both recipients of the Dr. Karin Duran Scholarship. The scholarship is given to MLIS students interested in academic or archival fields.

24th Issue of the Student Research Journal Explores Professionalism in Library and Information Science

Student Research JournalThe 24th issue of the fully student-run Student Research Journal is now available online. The issue features an invited contribution from a lecturer at the San José State University School of Information, an article by a recent graduate of the iSchool’s Master of Library and Information Science program, and a book review by a graduate student enrolled in the iSchool’s MLIS program.

Dr. Sandercock Earns Doctorate through Gateway PhD Program

Dr. Patricia Sandercock is the 22nd person to have had a doctorate conferred through the Gateway PhD program offered through a partnership between the San José State University School of Information and Queensland University of Technology from 2008 to 2021.

iSchool Alumni and a Student Named ALA 2023 Emerging Leaders

The 2023 Class of Emerging Leaders from the American Library Association has been announced. Out of the 46 chosen to participate in this prestigious leadership program for new library professionals, four are from the San José State University School of Information. Congratulations to Jennifer Castle, ’18 MLIS; Cybele Kohel, current student; Jennifer Powell, ’21 MLIS; and Brandi Veal, ’20 MLIS.

Alumna Named Vice President/President-elect of the Washington Library Association

Sarah Logan

The membership of the Washington Library Association recently elected a San José State University alumna as its vice president and president-elect. Sarah Logan earned her Master of Library and Information Science degree from the SJSU School of Information in 2012 and has since worked as a teacher-librarian. She says her job at the Dorothy Fox Elementary School in Camas, Washington, prompted her to run for the WLA board.
