Scholarships Awarded by Other Agencies

Many organizations offer scholarships for LIS education. Below are many that are available on a regular basis. Check with individual chapters of local or regional professional associations to find additional sponsors in your area of interest.

REFORMA Scholarship Program

Since 1971, REFORMA has supported the active recruitment of bilingual and bicultural librarians to meet the information needs of the Spanish-speaking community. The REFORMA Scholarship provides financial assistance to encourage and enable Latinos and/or Spanish speakers to pursue or advance a career in Library and Information Science. REFORMA offers two scholarships to those interested in library science:

Rita Torres/Bibliotecas Para La Genta Scholarship

Established in 1975, Bibliotecas Para La Gente (BPLG) advocates for and provides library services to the Spanish speaking and Latino communities of Northern California. BPLG has established a $3000 scholarship for a new or continuing LIS student who has demonstrated an interest in furthering the goals of BPLG in providing library service to the Spanish-speaking and Latino communities.

SCALL Scholarship

The Southern California Association of Law Libraries’ (SCALL) Scholarship would like to reward current library school students who hold promise of future involvement in the law library profession. The number of awards granted and amount of each award varies depending on current funding of the scholarship committee.

Each year the Statewide California Electronic Consortium (SCELC) offers scholarships to library science students on the staff of SCELC Member Libraries.

SJSU Alumni Association Dean’s Scholarship
College of Health and Human Sciences

Since 1975, the San José State University Alumni Association has awarded scholarships to students who excel in their academic studies and actively participate in the betterment of their communities through volunteer work. These awards are funded through the generous contributions of alumni and friends of SJSU and represent one of the strongest individual scholarship programs offered by any alumni association in the California State University system.

SJSU Graduate Equity Fellowship

The Graduate Equity Fellowship was created to encourage and assist students in their pursuit and completion of master’s degrees and careers. This fellowship is available only to California resident students admitted and enrolled in a master’s degree program. Credential-only candidates are not eligible.

William Randolf Hearst/CSU Trustees’ Award

The William Randolph Hearst Foundation established an endowed scholarship fund in 1984. In 1999, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation partnered with the CSU Board of Trustees to create the CSU Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement. Contributions from CSU Trustees and private donors increase the value and number of available awards. Special named scholarships will be awarded by the selection committee based on criteria such as studying in the STEM or education fields, veteran status, or exemplary community service.

WLA Maryan E. Reynolds Scholarship

The Washington Library Association (WLA) awards one or more Maryan E. Reynolds Scholarships annually to WLA members who are enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLIS degree program and have completed at least one semester or quarter. The scholarships are up to $6,000 per recipient. Applicants are evaluated based on demonstrated potential for leadership in the profession and commitment to libraries and library science. Applicants must also be current WLA members who have Washington State residency.
