VCARA Webcast: Metaverse Libraries – 2/28/17

Published: February 7, 2017

Join Dr. Valerie Hill, Dr. Marie Vans, and Alyse Dunavant-Jones on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 @ 6pm (Pacific) as they discuss Metaverse Libraries, an initiative the three founded through their mutual interest in connecting virtual world communities.

Metaverse Libraries’ main partner is the Community Virtual Library (CVL), which has been a main hub for librarians in virtual worlds for a decade striving to embed information literacy (or metaliteracy) in immersive learning environments, including digital citizenship. Currently, CVL is branching out to other virtual worlds, such as InWorldz and Kitely, as part of Metaverse Libraries, a combined effort among educators and information professionals to connect high quality education-oriented virtual communities as resources.

Valerie Hill, President of the Community Virtual Library in Second Life, received a PhD in Library and Information Science in 2012. Formerly a school librarian, Dr. Hill is a library and information science educator with a research focus on the intersection of information literacy and global digital participatory culture.

Marie Vans is a recent MLIS graduate of the San José State University iSchool. She also has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Colorado State University. She currently works for HP Labs in Fort Collins, Colorado. Her interests include the use of Virtual Worlds for Librarianship and Education as well as security printing and document analytics.

Alyse Dunavant-Jones is an MLIS student in SJSU’s iSchool. She is pursuing the Archives and Preservation and Digital Curation career pathways. Alyse is also a VCARA member, an InterPARES Trust student assistant, an International Directory of National Archives researcher, and a CVL reference volunteer.
