The School of Library and Information Science at San José State University (SJSU) prepares individuals for professional careers in the information professions, with a focus on the information needs of our global communities, connecting the user and the content. Graduates work in diverse areas, such as website design, digital asset management, information architecture, virtual reference services, archives, electronic records management, and librarianship.
The SJSU information school offers several online educational programs, including a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS), which is fully accredited by the American Library Association, as well as a Master’s Degree in Archives and Records Administration (MARA). A Teacher Librarian Services Credential program is also available. For those who already hold a master’s degree, the schools offers a Post-Master’s Certificate in Library and Information Science, designed for working professionals who want to stay current with emerging trends. Through a partnership with Queensland University of Technology, one of Australia’s top research institutions, the school’s doctoral students can earn a PhD in Library and Information Science.
In addition, a plethora of professional development and continuing education opportunities are available to the public. In support of its commitment to lifelong learning, the school offers a virtual colloquium series, MOOCs, the Library 2.0 virtual conferences, the i.School Open Classes program, faculty presentations, and more educational opportunities—many of which are free.
All programs are delivered online, and the SJSU information school is a recognized leader in online education. A member of the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C), the school received the 2013 Sloan-C Effective Practice Award in recognition of its effective use of the Sloan-C Quality Scorecard for the Administration of Online Education Programs. The school is also a member of Quality Matters (QM), a faculty driven, peer review process that is designed to certify the quality of online courses.
