LIBR 294 - Professional Experience: Internships
The SLIS internship course (LIBR 294) is a field–based, supervised, professional learning experience that take place in a library, an archival records repository, or another information organization. The internship course allows a student to obtain professional work experience while pursuing defined learning outcomes, testing theories and applying skills learned in other courses taken during the student's program.
Please begin by reading the LIBR 294. Professional Experience: Internships - Guidelines for important information and links to the required application and evaluation forms.
All SLIS internships follow the same guidelines and use the same forms, but for administrative and supervision purposes they are divided into sections for archival internships and sections for non–archival internships. Archival internships are those dealing with archival collections, special collections, records management, rare books, oral history, and the like. Non–archival internships include all other library/information agency environments, eg. public, academic, special and functions including cataloging, reference, collection development, children's services and the like. If you are not sure how to designate your internship opportunity, please contact one of the faculty listed below for assistance.
For questions about LIBR 294 in archival settings, contact Lori Lindberg.
For questions about LIBR 294 in non-archival settings, contact Dr. Bill Fisher.
To search for Internship opportunities in both archival and non-archival settings, see: LIBR 294 Internship Sites.
Do you have an opportunity for a SLIS student in your library or archive? Do you have updated information or changes for your current internship site listing?
Before proposing a new internship site, please read the LIBR 294. Professional Experience: Internships - Guidelines and make sure the internship site and the site supervisor is aware of and will comply with the requirements for a LIBR 294 credit internship. Once you are ready to propose a new site, or to update information on a current site, please submit the information through the SLIS Internship Sites — Institution Login page. If you are new to the internship database, please click on the Register an Institution link to set up an account for your institution. If you would like to propose a K-12 school library for a Teacher Librarianship field experience site, contact Dr. Geoffrey Liu directly for Fall 2009 or Dr. Ann Riedling for Spring 2010.
