SLIS Student Assistantships
SLIS students are eligible each semester for a variety of paid student assistantships that involve working with faculty on different projects. Some examples of projects and tasks that student assistants have worked on are:
- Research and writing/reporting in specific areas of study
- Designing and running social networking software (a MySpace for SLIS)
- Second Life — building faculty offices; building learning spaces that connect to the Web; building and managing a recruitment center for SLIS; supporting faculty in Second Life by handling the technology infrastructure during classes
- Supporting the internship coordinator by contacting internship sites, updating listings, proofreading and editing, de-bugging new database implementation
- Conducting research on booktalking and controversial fiction
- Supporting research on making Elluminate discussions available in real time to hearing-impaired students. The project uses Dragon Naturally Speaking.
- Manuscript editing, bibliographic research, researching selective best practices, literature reviews
- Working as a student peer trainer in Elluminate
- Supporting faculty in Elluminate by handling the technology during classes
- Interviewing students and alumni and writing Meet stories for SLISweb
- Providing administrative, graphic design, and other support for SLIS outreach
- Researching and compiling up-to-date lists of scholarships and grants for SLISweb
- Working with the SLIS Web Technologist
When available, student assistantship openings will be posted on the SLISADMIN list.
