Beta Phi Mu

Congratulations to the 2007 SLIS graduates who were recently nominated for Beta Phi Mu (BΦM) and inducted in Anaheim on Saturday, June 28 at the BΦM 60th Anniversary G-ALA !

As the new Beta Phi Mu Omega Chapter Faculty Advisor, I want to thank Dr. Blanche Woolls for her years of service to Omega chapter, and to let SLIS students know about the nomination and induction process for future semesters.

Each year in March the faculty will nominate eligible students from the previous calendar year graduates. This means that students who graduated in calendar year 2008 will be nominated and notified in March 2009.

Those students who accept the nomination may choose to be inducted into Beta Phi Mu either at ALA in the summer or at CLA in the fall, or "in absentia" at either of those times and places.

ANGEL Learning Announces Second Life Integration Project with SJSU SLIS

During Fall 2008, Jeremy Kemp, assistant director of the SLIS Second Life Campus, will conduct a joint project with ANGEL Learning to explore integration of the ANGEL Learning Management Suite (LMS) and the Second Life (SL) virtual world. Kemp’s investigation will focus on the union of the ANGEL LMS and SL, and specifically how student results from activities in virtual worlds can be securely shared with the ANGEL LMS. <br>
<br>
Under Kemp’s leadership, SLIS opened its Second Life island more than a year ago. SLIS students use it to meet in virtual spaces with their instructors and peers, construct 3D objects and exhibits, and make presentations through their avatars. The expected outcome of Kemp’s research is development of a “drop box” in the ANGEL LMS that students can use to share evidence of their work done in Second Life with faculty and peers. Kemp hopes to learn more about how to successfully integrate these two tools that play a vital role in today’s higher education environment. <br>
<br>
“We are pleased to join with ANGEL Learning on this shared exploration,” said Ken Haycock, SLIS director. “Together, we hope to learn more about how to successfully integrate two key tools that play a vital role in today’s higher education environment – combining the engaging qualities of 3D settings with the sound pedagogical framework of a world-class learning management system.”<br>
<br>
For more information, see <a href="http://www.angellearning.com/media/news/2008-07-10.html">http://www.angellearning.com/media/news/2008-07-10.html</a>

SLIS-CLA Audio Webcast: David Loertscher and Robin Williams

Title: Client-side information literacy: The challenge of a new century

Dr. David V. Loertscher, professor in the SJSU School of Library & Information Science, and Robin T. Williams, SLIS Spring 2008 graduate, presented the first California Library Association program (CLA) in Second Life. Williams and Loertscher explored ideas of turning the teaching of information literacy from a Microsoft model of doing business into a more Google-like approach where the idea is not: if we build it they will come; to: If they build it, they will use it. It requires all of us to consider carefully the mirror image of our traditional approaches; a shift in thinking; but, one that is central to the role of what an information professional is in an information-rich and technology-rich world.

Webcast: Fullerton Career Fair May 4

Did you miss it because you don't live anywhere near Fullerton, or because you were too busy getting finals and papers finished? It's now available on slisweb so that you can see it; or you can use the direct url:<br>
<br>
<a href="http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/media/mediaURL.htm#careerFULSP08&amp;menu_career">http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/media/mediaURL.htm#careerFULSP08&amp;menu_career</a><br>
<br>
Many thanks to Dale David, who came down from San Jose to tape the event, and to Brenda Ramirez, Coleen Wakaii, and the rest of the LISSTEN Board who worked with the Orange County chapter of REFORMA to make this happen.<br>
<br>
LISSTEN can always use new Board members, and we particularly need more people in San Jose. There are also jobs that can be done remotely, if you live nowhere near either campus. I'll be posting a request for volunteers for specific offices in the next day or two, and if you don't want a particular office, you can be a Board Member at Large. Please think about volunteering!

Title: A New Frontier for Recordkeeping Education: the San José Master of Archives and Records Administration (MARA) Degree

Core competencies and a drive for professionalism, technological change, corporate scandals, new forms of records, new ways of working, old concepts and new challenges have changed the face of educating and training today's recordkeeping professional. This talk will explain San José's response to the need for graduate level education in the records and information management professions through the development of MARA ? the Master of Archives and Records Administration. The development process will be reviewed in detail ? from concept to product ? and an overview of the program will be discussed as SLIS prepares to admit the first MARA cohort in the Fall of 2008.

San Jose SLIS Gateway PhD Program

I am writing to inform our School community of a marvelous new development and opportunity at the School. We have been in discussion for several months will colleagues at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to establish a San Jose cohort for their PhD program. QUT is a well-regarded Australian university with a strong international reputation. The members of our advisory council were particularly encouraging of the QUT partnership.

The program will be offered part-time over six years with short residencies and the use of distance learning technologies. The primary supervisor will be at San Jose, the residencies will be at San Jose, the fees will be no higher than for a Queensland resident. This may be the opportunity some of you have been waiting for… it is certainly a key part of our overall plan to focus more on research and scholarship.

This will be an exciting small cohort of up to a dozen doctoral students working with San Jose and QUT faculty.

SLIS Colloquia Webcast: David Loertscher and Robin Williams

Title: How can librarians get back in the information game?

The learning commons has been defined as a learning laboratory where books don't get in the way. In the face of digitalization and the dominance of Google, the question is, "How can librarians get back in the information game?" The idea of a learning commons is now being tried in a number of academic libraries and the idea is being discussed for school libraries. This lecture will go on the offensive to push the library into the center of teaching and learning K-20 in the areas of competing directly with Google, collaboratively building high-level learning experiences with faculty, making the learning commons a one-stop place for expert assistance, developing a 24/7/365 presence, and experimenting to build in the library models of the very best teaching and learning. We will join Andrew Keen in his book The Cult of the Amateur in examining the role of expertise in information but with the realization that we must aggressively push in different ways if we are going to keep this profession relevant.

Charles Harmon, Vice-President at Neal-Schuman Publishers and SLIS Advisory Council
member, looks at the two major print arenas for publication in the LIS field: scholarly
and professional books and journals. The difference between "scholarly" and "professional"
media is described, and the various approaches to both venues are discussed. Guidance is
given for contacting editors prior to submission and preparing initial e-mails and query
letters for optimum response. Both financial consideration (fees for articles and royalties
for books) and intellectual property consideration (copyright ownership, right of first
publication, etc.) are described.

SLIS Colloquia Webcast: John Dove

Title: What could search engine designers learn from the reference interview?

Query specifications by typical users are notoriously imprecise. And for many searches it is impossible to expect the user to fully and accurately specify what they are interested in. Because they do not know what is available for the asking, users cannot be expected to specify exactly what they want. Reference librarians have been developing a craft that, among other things, deals with this incomplete specification of desired results. What can search engine designers learn from prior art to improve query results? John Dove, CEO of Credo Reference, will contrast Google's vision of the future with one where reference librarians may be called upon to expertly modify online query systems in order to significantly improve query results for their users.

Our program has received a great deal of attention over the past six months, with the School and our faculty receiving national awards for innovation and service and the quality measures we have put in place. The editors of the Bowker annual asked if we would document how we built a new strategic planning and assessment process over the past three years on the solid foundations already in place, and became the largest and one of the best known programs in the world as a result. The attached paper is the result.
I would be pleased to answer any questions you may have.

Invitation to SLIS Presentation: "How to Get Published"

This workshop looks at the two major print arenas for publication in the LIS field: scholarly and professional books and journals. The difference between "scholarly" and "professional" media is described, and the various approaches to both venues are discussed. Guidance is given for contacting editors prior to submission and preparing initial e-mails and query letters for optimum response. Both financial consideration (fees for articles and royalties for books) and intellectual property consideration (copyright ownership, right of first publication, etc.) are described.
