Complimentary Student Memberships in ALA, ARMA, and State Library Associations

All SLIS students in LIBR 200 are given a complimentary (free!) one-year membership in the American Library Association and in their state library association (if affiliated with ALA). SLIS students in MARA 200 are given a one-year membership in ARMA.

As part of our commitment to the profession, the School has negotiated a special membership for all students in LIBR 200 for the American Library Association (ALA) link goes to non-SJSU web site and an affiliated state library association such as the California Library Association (CLA) link goes to non-SJSU web site. SLIS students in MARA 200 are given a one-year membership in ARMA link goes to non-SJSU web site. You have been joined at your address on file in MySJSU.

We believe that this membership will enhance your understanding of the profession and the issues it faces, which is part of the content of LIBR 200 and MARA 200, and encourage connections between the associations and our students. If you are already a member of ALA or one of the ALA-affiliated state library associations or of ARMA, we have been told that your membership will be extended for a year; please deal directly with the association. If you live in a state other than California, you will receive the ALA membership and, if your state has a state association with an arrangement with ALA (there are eighteen at present, see joint membership program list link goes to non-SJSU web site), you will be joined with that state association as well; in other words a student in Washington will be joined with the Washington Library Association, not the California Library Association; if there is no affiliated program the student will join ALA only.

SLIS sends the names of LIBR 200 and MARA 200 students to ALA or ARMA after the drop date for the semester has passed. The association can take several months to process our request.
