What I am doing now.

I am the web technologist for SJSU iSchool.  My day to day activities include maintenance of the iSchool web sites. Tasks include writing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and SQL code. I manage a team of student assistants who handle content management tasks such as adding new pages or updating currently published pages on our web sites. I manage our Drupal CMS installation.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

I learned web development at the iSchool by taking courses focused on technology uses. The courses of most use were those that taught me a practical coding language such as PHP, SQL, or database management. Also of great value was the special project I completed (LIBR 298) building the syllabus system for the school. The most surprising skill I learned was how to interact with coworkers in a totally online environment. Being a telecommuter is an unusual work environment in many unexpected ways.
