What I am doing now.

I am a Librarian with the Government of Saskatchewan, with the position of Public Library Coordinator. In Canada the provinces legislate public libraries, and all provinces have a central authority of one form or another. In Saskatchewan’s case that’s the Provincial Library and Literacy Office (PLLO), a branch of the Ministry of Education.

I’m one of three Public Library Coordinators at PLLO. In my particular scope I’m the go-to person for the TD Summer Reading Club (a great program that is run across the country), and I also run the Library Science Collection, a resource for library professionals in the Province. I’m in contact with other people within my Ministry and in other Ministries, public library systems across Saskatchewan, Library and Archives Canada, provincial committees, ALA, universities, vendors… a very broad range! If you could imagine simultaneously being a public, government and academic librarian, that would cover it.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

Analysis and evaluation are probably the most valuable skills, because I deal with government policy pertaining to public libraries a lot. Being able to communicate clearly is also essential because we deal with all levels of government, the library sector, and the public at large.
