MLIS 2010
Reference & Electronic Resources Librarian
University of La Verne Law Library
Ontario, CA USA

What I am doing now.

As a reference librarian, my duties include offering reference and research assistance, as well as providing legal research instruction in the library and at the law school. My electronic resources duties encompass not only electronic resources management, but also online research database training, web site development, managing the law library’s online/social media presence, and emerging technologies. Additionally, I’ve taken on a number of unofficial duties such as outreach and advocacy.

What are the most valuable skills I use in my job?

Aside from the obvious skills necessary for my position—such as reference, research, instruction, electronic resources management, web development, computer programming, UX/UI design—the skills I consider most valuable are actually communication skills (verbal and written). Since I’m always interacting with faculty, students, staff, or the public either in person, on the phone, or via email every day, I believe soft skills, those that help me interact effectively and harmoniously with others, are the most important.
