The National Council for Preservation Education (NPCE) is now accepting applications to its internship program until the deadline of Nov. 7 at 5:00 PM (Eastern). Current undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates are eligible to apply for these paid internships for the Spring semester of 2024. Details: There are 35 internship positions available located at over 30 U.S. National Parks, National Park Service (NPS) offices, and other Federal offices. The internships range in length from 10 to 30 weeks. Travel to the site and housing during the internship are usually the responsibility of the intern but there are several positions that include free or cheap housing and/or travel allowance. Qualifications: We seek academically promising students (3.2+ GPA) with coursework and/or experience (volunteer and/or paid) in the fields of museum studies, conservation, history, archeology/anthropology, library science, and allied fields. There’s something here for a wide range of interests: cataloging museum collections and research on previous occupants at the parsonage of the Thompson A.M.E. Zion Church at the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park in Auburn, NY; preparing Ancestral Puebloan artifacts and human remains for repatriation to tribes at the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum in Dolores, CO; digitizing archives and learning the National Park Service’s Collection Management System (ICMS/MCMS) at Yellowstone National Park, Gardiner, MT; identifying and organizing Plains-era artifacts (e.g. ceramics, bone, shell, lithics) at the Bureau of Reclamations collection held by the Kansas Historical Society in Topeka, KS; and much more. Follow up, interviews, and hiring are done by the on-site supervisor at the respective internship sites.
