In celebration of outstanding service to libraries, the American Library Association has recognized Mychal Threets, a 2018 graduate from the San José State University School of Information, as one of the 2024 I Love My Librarian Award Honorees. Threets stands among a select group of librarians honored for his exceptional community service and advocacy for mental health awareness.

Known for his engaging and empathetic approach, Threets has captured the hearts of audiences both online and in his community. Through his viral social media presence, he spreads the joy of libraries and champions mental health support services, effectively raising awareness about libraries’ positive impacts on communities.

Moreover, Threets utilizes his platform to advocate for mental health and representation, openly sharing his struggles and frequently offering support and affirmation to his viewers. According to one of his nominators, “He has touched many people in a positive way and has created a place for all to know they are cared about and loved.” 

Threets’ impact extends beyond the digital realm. As a supervising librarian at Solano County Library in Fairfield, California, he has played a pivotal role in promoting mental health awareness and providing support services to the community by spearheading the installation of SolanoConnex mental health kiosks in library branches, offering patrons access to vital resources for substance abuse, depression, and anxiety.

In receiving the I Love My Librarian award, Threets expressed gratitude for the opportunity to make a positive impact through his work in libraries by stating on LinkedIn, “Can’t believe I’m one of the honorees of the American Library Association’s ‘I Love My Librarian’ award. I love being a librarian! Truly honored to have been chosen alongside nine extraordinary library people doing wonders for their community. So proud of them!” His recognition underscores librarians’ vital role in fostering community well-being and promoting access to information and support services.

Threets’ commitment, creativity, and influence have not gone unnoticed. His groundbreaking efforts have propelled Solano County Library to unprecedented levels, solidifying its position as a hub for progress, education, and diversity.

Threets is one of 10 winners selected from nearly 1,400 nominations from library users nationwide. As a 2024 I Love My Librarian awardee, he received a $5,000 cash prize, complimentary registration, and a travel stipend to attend ALA’s LibLearnX event held in January. Threets joins numerous alumni of the SJSU iSchool’s Master of Library and Information Science degree program who have received this award over the years, including the 2023 winner Kathryn Blackmer Reyes.
