First-Year Library Services Plan for the Incarcerated: This project is a theoretical one-year plan for library services within a prison. It includes responses on how the library would align with the facility’s mission and values, demographic information on inmates, hypothetical financial support and budgeting, and strategies for success with patrons, coworkers, and other correctional stakeholders. The plan focuses on three major service goals for the year: cognitive-based therapeutic poetry workshops, early literacy classes for caregivers, and a summer reading program, outlining the structure, timeline, and learning outcomes for each goal. This project also includes a theoretical reflection on the year’s library services as well as plans for the future.

Savannah Harik is a fourth-semester MLIS student at San Jose State University, and she works as a Library Assistant II for the Santa Cruz Public Libraries in Santa Cruz, CA. She holds a BS in Geosciences from the University of Rhode Island and has previously worked in research, municipal waste reduction, candle-making, ESL education, organic vegetable farming, and food service before realizing her childhood dream of working in a library. She hopes her work as a future librarian will involve providing library services to incarcerated patrons. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking in the redwoods, leisurely bike rides, and trying to crochet.
